The “smart” phone has become a standard piece of communications equipment for many people and it has even spawned a new word that essentially combines smart and phone into one word. Each smartphone has different features, and there are many different things that a user can accomplish with this popular technology. The smartphone can be used for standard calls, but it can also be used for surfing the Internet, checking email, watching live video, listening to music, and utilizing compact programs that are designed specifically for the functions of the phone. Some smartphones have blurred the lines between cellular phones, compact computers, and portable music players. With that is mind, here are a few thoughts on how to select a smartphone. Selecting a smartphone often comes down to what the device can do and how that may impact the user in his or her daily life. In other words, what is the person actually going to do with their smartphone and will they actually make use of all the potential applications? Certainly, the “bells” and “whistles” can be fun and exciting, particularly when people are talking about certain devices. However, do people really need a deluxe device? Or, would a simpler phone do the job?
While people can perform a variety of tasks with a smartphone, this doesn’t mean that they have to pay for the ability to have all of these functions on the go. In addition, the smartphone is still a compact device and it can be hard to read a spreadsheet, play a video game, or watch a movie on a tiny screen. Of course, this does require a certain amount of honesty on the part of the individual. Some people can be tempted by the latest and greatest, and they may not admit that they would be just fine with less technology in their hands.
Plans, plans, plans
People can get excited about deals, or at least about offers that they perceive to be a deal. Usually, the deal centers on the price of the smartphone itself, rather than the actual service plan. Every smartphone comes with some sort of service plan, just like cellular phones have had since their inception. In many cases companies will give away smartphones or offer them at discount prices because they want the consumer to sign up for a service plan which includes both voice and data. Therefore, before people grab the newest smartphone, they need to decide if they really want to make a financial commitment that may last for a couple of years. Smartphones are interesting and intriguing, but consumers have to keep in mind that they come with a cost.
